A Patriotic Place

As you probably know, Reddit had a event where it gave its users a giant canvas to paint on as they wish. People teamed up a drew all sort of pictures, mostly flags. To my pleasure, I found several Croatian flags on the canvas. I think it would be fun if I showcased them and explained everything that I recognized. I know a lot of you are not Croatian, so this might be interesting to you.

Heads up, this post is formatted in an unusual way. I recommend you read this on your computer and not your phone.

Let’s start with the most standard one. This is just the Croatian flag and emblem with the red chessboard pattern on the sides. The pictures on the bottom are two Pokemon and a symbol I don’t recognize. I don’t know what they have to do with Croatia, but they still look nice.

This one has a bit more going on. The top left corner shows what a tram in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, looks like. The blonde guy is Luka Modrić, a famous football player. The anthropomorphic mouse is from a Croatian animated movie called Čudnovate zgode šegrta Hlapića (The Marvellous Adventures of Hlapić the Apprentice), based on a Croatian novel of the same name. I didn’t know why Doodle Jump was on the flag, but then I Googled it and found out the game was made by a Croatian company. I don’t know what the remaining two pictures represent, though.

This image is a tie. We don’t know for sure which country it originated from, but it’s believed to be Croatia. HDA stands for Hrvatski državni arhiv (the Croatian state archives).

Now this is my favorite one. It’s several countries connected with a heart, how cute. The countries in question are Slovenia, Slovakia, Serbia and Croatia. I can’t explain everything from the other flags, but I can explain what’s on my own. Starting from the left, we have licitarsko srce (the licitar heart); a popular type of cake in the north of Croatia. Next to is it the Croatian emblem, followed by Vučedolska golubica (Vučedol pigeon); an artifact that’s one of the symbols of Vukovar, a Croatian city. Next up is Professor Baltazar; the main character of the Croatian cartoon of the same name. The last thing on the list is the outline of Croatia itself.

That’s everything I found. I’m sorry I couldn’t talk about everything; perhaps someone in the comments can fill the gaps. Did you take part in the r/place event? What was your favorite part of the big picture?
