In my defense, there are language theories that preach that kind of mindset. Structuralism is an idea that the meaning of a word is determined and limited by the meanings of other words in the same language. For example, if we eliminated the word “shack” from the English language, another pre-existing term for a house would take its place.
So that’s what being a linguistics professor is like.
