A Funny Story From Work

As some of you may know, I’m currently working part-time as an administrator. During my job interview, I was told that, in the office, all my coworkers will be female. They have men working from home or in the storage room, but I’ll be the only one in the office. The interviewer asked me if I would be okay with that and I said yes. I’m not sure why she asked me that. Maybe there was a male applicant before me who refused to work in an all-female environment.

A few days later, I got the job. One morning, I was talking to my coworkers. My mentor said she wanted her boyfriend to propose to her. She added that the man should be the one to propose to the woman and everyone except me agreed. I said, “Well, it’s custom, not a rule.” She agreed, but she still wanted him to be the one to propose. I thought, “I’m the only man in this room and I’m the biggest feminist,” but I didn’t say anything.

Some time later, a woman asked another one for her ID, but she said her boyfriend had it. The asker was not happy; she exclaimed, “How come every time I ask one of you for an ID, your boyfriend has it?”. I overheard the conversation and I agreed with the complaint. I asked, “Don’t you have a wallet?” It reminded me of the previous story, so I told it to the coworkers and admitted what I thought in the end. They all laughed and one of them said, “We made a good choice when we hired you.” I couldn’t have asked for a better reception. I made a good choice when I applied for the job.
