Today is Valentine’s Day, so I decided to draw my main couple, Safety and Freedom, dress up as the main couple of Hazbin Hotel, Vaggie and Charlie. It feels weird writing their names in that order.

I also want to talk a bit about Hazbin Hotel. For those who don’t know, the show is about the princess of hell, Charlie, wanting to redeem sinners and send them to heaven. Not a bad idea for a show; I love a good redemption story. For the most part, the idea resulted in a pretty good show.

Like with last time, let’s get the bad stuff out of the way first. The show tries cram too much plot into eight 20-minute episodes. I get that the higher-ups probably gave the crew too few episodes to tell they story that they wanted to tell, but the problem is still there. They should’ve taken some things out and saved them for season 2. On the bright side, the success of Hazbin Hotel could lead to the team getting more episodes for the next season. Business doesn’t have to stifle art, they can cooperate.

Now let’s get to the good stuff. The show is a feast for the eyes. There’s a lot of diverse and interesting designs, even with the background characters. While the backgrounds themselves use a lot of red, there’s enough break time (for lack of a better term), for it to not become monotonous. It’s a good thing one of the episodes takes place almost entirely in heaven.

The characters are also a lot of fun. Even though some of them develop too quickly (for reasons I’ve already explained), they’re still enjoyable to watch. I love how sweet Charlie and Vaggie are to each other, I love the rivalry between Alastor and Vox (radio demon vs TV demon, I get it), I love watching Angel Dust get support from the people around him, etc. My favorite character is Lucifer; the blonde, prideful dork with a light-themed name. Is anyone surprised?

Lastly, I wanna talk about the music. The show has a lot of songs, but I never found them overbearing. There’s a variety of moods: goofy, angry, sad, hopeful, etc. The team tried everything and it all worked out. I’m still listening to the songs on repeat. Overall, I really enjoyed the show, even with its flaws. If you enjoyed the Hazbin Hotel pilot, give season 1 a chance. It’s gonna be a happy day in hell.
