A Gift for Dad

Christmas is coming in a few days, so I’d like to share a funny story about me and my brother, the iconic duo.

Our parents are divorced and our dad lives in another town. Every year around Christmas, we come over and visit him for a week. We always bring him a present for Christmas. A few years ago, we were searching for something in a store and we found a Yoda keychain, Our dad’s a Star Wars geek. He loves it so much, he claims his religion is “Jedi” (I wonder if he would get along with Pastafarians).

My brother and I bought the keychain, but we forgot to pack it when we went to his town. We were already there when we found out we messed up. We still had a day or two until Christmas, so we went shopping with our grandparents. I kept looking around a store, but I couldn’t find a good replacement. Eventually, I settled for a “Build your own Star Destroyer” set.

Without my dad’s knowledge, I built the spaceship model. It had a few rough edges, but it looked good enough to present to my dad. When the big day came, my brother and I gave him the model and he was overjoyed. Later on, we confessed our mistake, but he didn’t mind. When he drove us back, we offered to give him the keychain, but he said we could keep it.

Everything worked out in the end, but now that I think about it, maybe he would’ve been happier if we gave him the disassembled model. A lot of people like assembling them and, despite my inexperience, I still had fun doing it. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20.
